So the problem is getting a working MySQL install. Any reason in
particular why the suse-rpms where not used:

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/current/suse/ap2/mysql-shared.rpm
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/current/suse/ap3/mysql.rpm
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/current/suse/ap3/mysql-client.rpm
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/current/suse/ap3/mysql-devel.rpm

[armand]$ rpm -qlp mysql-shared.rpm
/usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so
/usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.10
/usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.10.0.0

Unless there are other pressing reasons to install a binary tar file, I
suggest using these. Please note that I have never touched a suse based
system, I just used my Redhat environment to check the contents of the
package.
