OK, understood.

That's the really mystical part of it. Any time I open any .php3 or
.php file from non-midgard projects, I get in httpd error_log:

midgard-lib: mgd_connect to midgard@midgard failed: Can't connect to
local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)[Thu
Apr 26 19:51:27 2001] [warn] [client 192.168.0.1] Midgard: failed to
open midgard for midgard
[Thu Apr 26 20:21:01 2001] [debug] mod_midgard.c(1195): [client
192.168.0.1] midgard_translate_handler(latin1,
http://locutus:80/www.netzwissen.de/faq2/faq.php)

And in mysql's log:

010426 19:51:23 Aborted connection 5 to db: 'faq2' user: 'db_connect'
host: `locutus.netzwissen.de' (Got an error reading communication
packets)

In the case of connecting to the midgard admin site
(http://locutus:80/admin/):

midgard-lib: mgd_connect to midgard@midgard failed: Can't connect to
local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)[Thu
Apr 26 23:14:11 2001] [warn] [client 192.168.0.1] Midgard: failed to
open midgard for midgard
[Thu Apr 26 23:14:11 2001] [error] [client 192.168.0.1] File does not
exist: /usr/local/httpd/htdocs/favicon.ico

In THIS case, there is NO indication of a connect in the mysql log.
So, I would say that there is a problem in the commununication between
the mod_midgard and the mysql db - for whatever reason ....

Meanwhile, we checked the libs, we checked the linking, we checked the
mysql socket, we checked the db itself (which is up and running and
accessible through mysql client). On David's recommendation, I also
upgraded to the freshest suse rpm's, apache 1.3.19 and mysqld 3.2.33,
but with the same results. ;-(((
