I've never seen that happen. Could you do the following for me:

$ script configuresession
$ <configure as you previously ran it>
$ exit

Then send me (offlist, compressed please) configuresession and config.log.

No. That document describes the PHP3 installation. Our PHP4 installation 
requires a regular PHP4 installation before you install our extension.
