It could be a manifestation of the bug described in 
http://www.midgard-project.org/bugs/?id=167

You could try picking up the cvs snaps at 
http://snaps.midgard-project.org/. These tarballs are generated from CVS 
everyday as of, oh, ten minutes ago and save you the hassle of setting 
up CVS properly. People are, however, encouraged to do so. If you're 
going to track CVS, save us and yourself the bandwith. But for a 
one-off, these can be handy.
