Sorry, I think I don't understand the exact meaning of the question...
If you only need day granularity, then you can normally use the article
calendar field, although I don't know if it's as powerful for data retrieval
as the event functions.
If you need sub-day granularity (down to 1 sec), or if you want a complete
set of functions to retrieve your records, then it's better to use the event
functions.
The only issue is that you have to "link" the event to the article with the
article guid, by setting this guid in one of the all-purpose fields (ie.
title, description or extra); or you can simply fill those field with the
article content, if you don't need the article to be linked to any topic.
