php 4.0.6 was compiled with midgard as an extension of php :
./configure --disable-xml --with-mysql=/usr/local
--with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --with-midgard
and apache with:
./configure \
"--with-layout=Apache" \
"--enable-module=so" \
"--enable-module=rewrite" \
