you need to rebuild php, just dont use the --with-apache tag, and it is usually a good 
idea to put the config dir somewhere else..
eg. something like ...(check with ./configure --help)
--with-config-dir=/somewhere else


the gtk module is just like a midgard or mysql module...
have a look at gtk.php.net for more info..
