The bootscript will prepare the sources to be compiled. You must have done it at least once, or it would not have a Makefile at all. But if that was a long time ago, funny stuff might happen. While not strictly necesary, I run update whenever I update from CVS. This is not required for non-cvs sources, btw. The releases have the bootstrap applied already.
