Midgard doesn't know about the location of this socket. It trusts libmysqlclient to provide a working default (which is pretty sane if you ask me). However, when libmysqlclients default doesn't work, you can tell libmysqlclient to use another default location through your my.cnf. I don't have one on a system I can reach now but someone on the list will be able to provide you with a sample.
