It's already there :-) The libmysqlclient is shown in ldconfig -v
I compiled PHP with mysql support just before. I'm 99.9% sure that PHP will 
also use the mysql_connect call. A working IMP setup that stores userdata in 
the mysql db is a proof of that (?)
