Greetings!

We saved up lots of news for this issue. There are tales of Midgardians on
motorcycles and plans for Midgard in California. There are notes of
developers interest as well. Torben has been hard at work on MidCOM and has
starting the ball rolling for 1.4.4. The CVS server is also on the move and
looking for suggestions for more effective use. I will be on vacation for
the next few weeks but will have access to e-mail, dont hesitate to drop me
a note if you have something to include in the next MWS.

1.4.3 is released, suggestions for 1.4.4 roadmap solicited.
------------------------------------

Midgard 1.4.3 was released June 14th 2002 and is available for download on
the Midgard Website. 1.4.3 is comprised mostly of bug fixes and adaptations
for external distro and library issues. Information on the changes can be
found at:

http://www.midgard-project.org/news/release%2D1%2E4%2E3.html

It is time to start putting together a road map for 1.4.4; suggestions and
bugs should be sent to the Midgard lists for discussion and adoption.

Midgardians in Europe.
------------------------------------
Henri Bergius is on tour by motorcycle and looking for Midgardians as he
travels through Europe. According to the online travel log he has had beers
with Piotras & Anjushka and has found a high percentage of the Metal bars in
the Czech region. There are few too many crashes for my taste but everyone
seems ok. Pictures and the travel-log are available at:
http://reissut.nemein.net/journal/

Henri is checking his e-mail so if you want to see if he is coming your way
you can e-mail him or post to the list and someone may know where and when
they plan to travel over the next weeks.

MWS Article: Midgard Bugtracker Usage Guide
------------------------------------
It has been awhile since we communicated procedures for using the Midgard
Bugtracker system. By way of reminder for bug reporters:

Each new bug that comes in is classified as "new". As long as the bug is in
this state, the bug report hasn't been seen or evaluated. When the report is
reviewed it will usually either set it to "Acknowledged" which roughly
means, that this might be possible and that we will look into it further. A
bug can also be set to "Feedback" if there are questions open about it. When
it is clear that the report is really a bug it will advance to "Confirmed"
status which opens it up for developers ("Assigned") for fixing
("Resolved").

In consequence this means that developers should focus on bugs that are
already confirmed first. Only if there is nothing, look over acknowledged or
feedback bugs. When you decide to take over a bug, assign it to you so that
it gets out of the confirmed list and we keep an overview who is working on
what. When you resolve a bug please document it through bugnotes, so that we
keep some history. If anybody is missing developer access rights in the
bugtracker, please drop Torben an e-mail.

One last thing for everybody: Though the bugs get mailed to midgard-dev,
please write any comment as a bugnote in the bugtracker and not as a reply
email. This greatly increases the transparency and history of a
given bug because all information about it is kept in one place.

Midgard CVS Move
------------------------------------
After some debate it has been decided to accept the generous offer to
host cvs.midgard-project.org on 'Nathan', a machine administered by
Torben Nehmer. Torben will take up most of the migration of the cvs, and
will communicate any changes needed from the developers. For now we should
assume that the CVS instructions on the site can remain unchanged, but this
would be a good opportunity to discuss whether there should be structural
changes to the CVS or the CVS procedures.

Torben was keen to acknowledge Aurora's contributions to Midgard over the
years:

"I would like to say a loud and warm thank you to our previous cvs host
Aurora. Aurora has been sponsoring the hardware and bandwidth for the
midgard cvs since late 2000. Basically I offered Nathan for a CVS
Replacement, because Aurora's Server had often Problem's with its
connections. Also they don't have the time for a full administration for it,
partly, because most of the Midgard Developers don't work at Aurora anymore
which makes administration a bit of a hassle. Nathan is more closely
available to the team, since I am willing to offer privileged CVS Access to
users that want to have it."

If you have input or thoughts on how the CVS strategy can be refined e-mail
them to the list.

MWS Article: MidCOM 0.2.0 public Beta Version
------------------------------------
After a development phase of roughly four weeks, the next milestone in
the development of MidCOM [1] has been reached. Version 0.2.0, the first
public beta, is now available for download [2]. Following the roadmap, we
have completed up to Stage four. MidCOM now provides an extensive working
framework for application development with Midgard. MidCOM currently
features the Advanced Style Engine, the Navigation Access Point System and
the possibility for dynamically loaded components.

 [1] http://www.nathan-syntronics.de/midgard/docs/midcom.html
 [2] http://users.nehmer.net/~classic/MidCOM-0.2.0.tar.gz

The Advanced Style Engine is a powered up replacement for Midgard's
regular style processing. The basic idea is that you can assign a style
to each instance of a component. This allows you to build very modular
styles even in complex websites avoiding the problem of one style having
close to one hundred Style elements in it. Instead you create a separate
style for every component you need and assign it to the respective instances
of the component.

A completely different problem is solved through the Navigation Access
Point (NAP) System. NAP is a specification which allows components to
abstractly define what of them should go into the Navigation tree (read
"Sitemap") and what not. The NAP System interface provides you access to
this abstract tree and completely encapsulates the gory details of
pulling this information out of the topic tree.

While the first alpha version could only display one component per
Request, this is not sufficient most of the time. Often, especially on
Homepages, you need a way of collecting different information together.
Dynamically loadable components come into play here. They allow you to "put
together" your website using simple commands where you reference to other
components via a regular URL. Similar to Lego you only need to plug the
whole thing together and let the framework worry about the details.

During the next weeks we will take this framework into active usage on
one customer website. The next milestone in our MidCOM development will be
the automatic Administration Site builder.

Said Torben: "I would be happy if as much people as possible could test it
so that I can get out all of the more important bugs. I will try to put up
an bugtracker project for MidCOM on Midgard's official Bugtracker as soon as
possible."

Midgard at OSCOM, September 25-27
------------------------------------
The 2nd annual OSCOM, Open Source Content Management, conference has been
scheduled for Wednesday, 25 September to Friday, 27 September 2002 in
Berkeley, California, USA. The three-day conference will feature a keynote
from Ted Nelson of Xanadu fame as well as presentations by representatives
from WebDAV, Zope, SMIL/Bitflux, PostNuke, Wynona and others.
Midgard/Nemein's own Henri Bergius will be giving an overview of Midgard on
Wednesday, September 25 and there will be a Midgard workshop on Friday,
September 27.

September is usually a good time to visit the San Francisco bay area, the
weather before the fall rains being dry and cool. I am trying to make
arrangements to be there and would encourage all Midgardians to do the same.
For more information the OSCOM website is at:
http://www.oscom.org
The conference information can be found at:
