Well, Emile said it should work the way you wanted too. But the usual way these days is to install apache and php from some kind of package management system (fx: rpm or deb) and enable midgard as a module in apache. Using package management really makes sysadmin life a breeze so I strongly recommend it. It isn't strictly necessary, you can build apache from source. It is just easier in the long run, with security updates and so on.
