Well, Emile said it should work the way you wanted too. But the usual
way these days is to install apache and php from some kind of package
management system (fx: rpm or deb) and enable midgard as a module in
apache. Using package management really makes sysadmin life a breeze
so I strongly recommend it. 

It isn't strictly necessary, you can build apache from source. It is
just easier in the long run, with security updates and so on. And with
php there are _tons_ of dependencies with other software libraries, so
php is a chore to build from source.
