There used to be a fork (back in the days of PHP3 and Midgard 1.2.x) now

"stock" PHP work with all versions of midgard-php.

Okay, but the other way round. I'm trying to create Midgard-RPMs for Mandrake.

Great, would you share?

Does midgard-php conflict with normal php?

no

Or could I leave midgard-php out altogether and just install php?

no

What's the relation between the two versions and midgard itself?

There are not to versions. midgard-php is an php extension. PHP
extensions are usually installed by an entry in the php.ini file.
Check php docs for details, if you want.
