Here is how I fixed the problem (accidentally).

I modified line 1075 of configure in mod_midgard to include -print-search-dirs and then the compile worked. I have no idea why.

ac_try="$ac_cpp -print-search-dirs conftest.$ac_ext >/dev/null 2>conftest.out"

I am not an expert but looks like that first error triggers all , while midgard.h
when is not found causes proper error message.
