And returning to using PHP MySQL functionality, does Midgard provide a
MySQL connection object to use? Or should I establish my own
connection to the DB? I couldn't figure this one out... though.
No, midgard _hides_ the mysql connection and connection data. You'll have to provide that yourself.

Maybe I am being obtuse, but I am not clear as to what are the benefits of replication on other apps.
