It works! Many thanks for the suggestion. Not sure why a copy of the file
works and not a link, but am not complaining.
I'd actually tried this at some point in the past, think I was using midgard
1.4.3, just hadn't tried it with 1.4.4.

Best choice of new generation (except Coca-Cola):

1. Create simple php file with <? phpinfo(); ?> in it.
2. See that page in Your browser.
3. Check what is exactly extension dir
4. Place midgard.so in that dir
