How do I turn it on?

Yes, indeed. Did you set the hosts table in the Midgard Lite
database to correspond your host's name?

yes.

Anyway what is this file - where does it come from and what is PEAR?

apt-cache show php4-pear
The package php4 suggests that you install it.

This is a bit OT but I don't have the php cli on my system - it's needed for pear. I use Debian - anybody know which Debian package provides it?
apt-get install php4-pear

And another thing: I've got Debian php4-dbase installed - why isn't that the same thing as DB?

If you are interested I have been evaluating a number of CMS systems on a debian box and have been writting up my experiences with installation and use. I have installed Midgard Midgard Lite, also installed Drupal, Plone, APC Action Apps, Bricolage, My Source and a few others. If you are interested check out www.sydney.wilderness.org.au/docs with the link to the midgard stuff being http://www.sydney.wilderness.org.au/docs/node.php?id=24
The website uses drupals collobarative book feature and should improve as get a bit more time to explore the different Drupal modules.
