Spider admin is old-admin with proper sitegroup management. If you were 
using a style to brand your old-admin, it will probably work on it. It 
also does WYSIWYG HTML editing on IE5.5+ and on other browsers using 
Java (if you configure it so).

If I repligard asgard into an existing, working (heavily depended on)
installation where will I find it? Will it overwrite anything? Will it just
create a style or a style and a host? Am I worrying too much?
 

It should behave nicely unless there is a GUID clash. If you are unsure, 
back up your DB first,
