Well, after installing Midgard Lite on two Linux based isp hosts and a Windows 2k system, I've approached near zero productivity with the toolset after a week of work.
There are tempting hints that it might be an interesting system to run, but 0.8.2 is just too unstable at this point. The mailing list archives are a good resource. Some issues dealing with PHP, MySQL, and Apache dependencies were there in the archive, though it took way too much effort of searching in the Yahoo system to find them; I eventually used Google's better search ability to locate appropriate posts faster. An install FAQ which compiles some of these issues would be nice. I tried a Win2k install on my laptop, just because I already had LAMP mostly installed already. The only thing that works in my Windows 2k install is the sample site pages. That is, it can pull bootstrapped articles from the database and present them, but that's about it. Aegir CMS loops in a vicious circle from the login page -> newframeset -> login page. The Asgard page opens, but the 'Create new' links all pop me back to the index.php page. Old Midgard Admin appears to be missing images and fails with an error about RCSLib.class (line 74), presumably due to the non-existance of /var/cvs directory under Win2k. SpiderAdmin almost appears to work, but fails for the same reason, an RCSLib error. Looks like the admin interfaces depend pretty strongly on RCS/CVS command line utilities and fixed directories, some of which may be present under Linux but which don't exist under Windows. Usability wise, I can't comment too much because not much works on any of the installs. I wish I could see Aegir in action under Lite. The other admin pages expose quite a lot of raw PHP code, and IMHO don't suite what my customer will need for providing easily navigable administration for a site. I'm wondering if Aegir is really much different, in terms of raw PHP exposure or organization. I may revisit the full Midgard project again, and would like to hear any feedback regarding the issues I mentioned. But for now Midgard Lite is not working out very well for me.
