Register globals was off; I remembered turning it off as advised, so that fixed the problem.
Very happy to have a midgard installation to experiment on at home finally.
There is a working installation on a live server at work but I couldn't bring myself to play with it until I'd sussed out the program on my own home machines. Would have been in serious trouble if I'd broken a live site and couldn't fix it.

this is fixed in 1.0.1 not it reports login errors
