Free disk space + memory.
I just reminded myself (can not find it in archives) about someone who had problems with exporting files and swap partition was not used when there was no more memory.
*nix in general tend to go bonkers if swap is not available at all (turned off or even wrose, never initialized. Insufficient swap is handled much more gracefully).
