The YAMP scripts work in UTF-8 so they propably produce UTF-8 output, if your midgard database (or repligard import config) is set to use ISO-8859-1 then you need to use iconv to convert the character set back to 8859-1 before importing.
as for unapproved content being published, this needs more investigation on what is happening.
As for delete_expired.pl, this only works with -a dumps (since otherwise it has no knowledge of what is expired and what is not).
