I had a similar problem in 1.6.1, installed from the Debian midgard binaries. It
got a bit better once I added a company and website. Try using Spider admin
(i.e., http://localhost:8001/spider-admin) to add a new sitegroup (i.e. company)
and website, then go back to Aegir and see if the display is improved.

I am not sure if this is what solved my problem (I could have unknowingly
installed some missing library that Aegir likes to have during an apt-get
install of something else), but Aegir is now useable (though not perfect; I
still have some problems with the left-hand column).

There was an earlier thread on this issue, where the problem was identified as
being in Midgard 1.6.0 (and solved, for some people, in 1.6.1): Have a look in
case there is something helpful there:
