I have Debian stable (with backported PHP and MySQL from dotdeb.org), Midgard 1.6.2 compiled with defaults (./configure, make, make install) works like charm, supposedly the Debian Testing packages built by Piotras work as well.
OTOH: I have battled for two days with a certain Fedora Core 1 (Yarrow) and in the end being utterly unable to get things to work properly, It's related to so called PCRE (or Perl Compatible Regular Expressions) and some Redhats have issues (Kaukola ran into a PCRE issue on RHEL3, had to rebuild PHP after hand-upgrading to a new version of PCRE).
"Aegir does not work" ie Aegir left side bar tabs are labelled only with numbers is almost certain giveaway of a PCRE problem (and it does affect a lot of other things as well making the installation practically unusable, it's just not immediately obvious)
If you provide us with more info on your exact setup then we might be of more use.
