I suggest 1.7rc2. There should be no changes ( for old API ) before 1.7 stable 
release.
Besides 1.7rc2 provides much faster file system based MidCOM . which is slower 
in 1.6.3.

Use datagard's "update" option. It will update database and make all needed 
changes.
If you want to use debian packages, you must compile them yourself for sarge.
'dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot ' should be enough for all packages.
You will be prompted for datagard's usage when midgard-data is installed for 
the first time ( debian only ).
