The problem with the mysql client authentication is a known issue with
older applications (like php) that don't yet support the newer client
libraries. 
The Mysql site has a number of solutions to this issue:

default login = admin
default password = password

ok, so midgard can not connect to the db.
please check your midgard-settings
ie check if cou can get into midgard-db
> mysql midgard -umidgard -pmidgard66

I am using midgard on SuSE9.3 for a few month now - running smooth, no
trouble with mysql at all..
