Sounds like this is related to http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MSQL-9

We decided to support the maven-way of defining variables. But there are more 
db-specific ways to define them, so maybe we should figure out a way to support 
such syntax as well.

Why not create a jira-issue and suggest this as an improvement?

Because the scripts are in that format.    The replacement variables are in a 
format like "$$foobar." instead of "${foobar}".


I could write a plugin to translate from one format to the other, but I haven't 
yet decided which would make more sense.

There is the http://mojo.codehaus.org/sql-maven-plugin/ .. why do you
need a sqlplus specific plugin?
