Well, this goes for a Maven repository. If you want some other sort of repository, you're not locked down by the Maven rules. Still, when maven-deploy-plugin handles the upload it will enforce the Maven rules.
There is some RPM repo support in Nexus. Maybe that allows a different naming schema, I don't know.
