Where did you read that exec:java is required ? That doesn't seem mentioned
anywhere on aws sdk website.

Once you have a successful mvn install, just follow their instructions
http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSSdkDocsJava/latest/DeveloperGuide/java-dg-setup.html#java-dg-using-maven
to use it in your project.
