addIndexingBackendOptions method in index-* plugins

Hi,

Can someone please explain the purpose of the following method in many
of the index-X plugins?

  public void addIndexBackendOptions(Configuration conf) {
  }

I am not getting it just now and therefore can't substantiate the Javadocs
