Nutch has 2 flavors: 1.x and 2.x. Trunk [0] is where the current 1.x work
is done.

I don't think so. There are some issues discussed over user group about
running with mySQL and Cassandra as backend. Hbase seems to perform well
for far.

Yes. 2.x branch [1] is the trunk for 2.x releases. 2.1 is a stable release.
After 2.1 release, there have been some changes (mostly jira fixes) and
those are present in 2.x branch. Its yet to be released. So, 2.x branch is
kinda a "work in progress" thing.
