Is there a difference b/w not mentioning this attribute and setting it to 'no'?
because i read that it's same and was not working as well provided that i did 
not mention invoke in deployment script... OR I should even not mention the 
invoke element. ?

Alternatively you can set initializePartnerRole="no", and not define
invoke service in deploy.xml
