Your problem sounds like you just "copied" the .iso file to the disk rather than burned it's image in place. When you "explore" your burned CD from WindowsXP, does it have a normal filesystem that you can explore and drill down into, or is it a single file?
The md5 check just confimed that your ISO was downloaded fine. It does not confirm that you are burning the image correctly.
