Uggr, don't disable the category. Just set thruDate to the category
Open https://*yoursite.com*/catalog/control/EditProductCategories?productId=* your_product_id* change the *red* text according to you. Here, you can find the list of categories which are associated with this product. Just set *thruDate* as current time or past date, then that product won't visible in that category on front end. *OR* set current date to *Sales discontinuation Thru Date* field at https://*yoursite.com*/catalog/control/EditProduct?productId=* your_product_id* will solve your problem.
