how to keep a variable in context?

I have a variable  ${parameters.productId} which is available at the
screen level.  Then I use a drop-down and I am redirected to another
screen.  This new screen no longer has the variable
${parameters.productId}.   How should I store / restore a variable
like this?  Thanks. Patrick
