The Urgency of Mobile Commerce for E-Retailers These facts that should be an urgent wake-up call for Internet retailers on the need to add mobile commerce sites and apps to their online retail businesses. There are now 60 million web-enabled smartphones in the U.S., double the number of one year ago. At the end of last year, smartphones accounted for 21% of cell phones in the U.S. and by the end of Q1 of this year they accounted for 29%, according to the Nielsen Company. Nielsen projects that by the third quarter of next year, smartphones will outnumber conventional cell phones. Traffic at m-commerce sites is up more than 50% in the first half of this year, and the number of mobile commerce sites is now growing so fast, it’s hard to keep track of the number. Sales are booming at m-commerce sites. Last week, Internet Retailer reported that Amazon booked more than $1 billion in mobile commerce sales in the last 12 months.
