For other newbies Was actually related to r1070570 and resolved by r1071967 it worked for me because another commit happened to fix the create product screen.
@BJ I understand cleaning all is the way to go for the moment I will try this strategy and see how long I last before getting in trouble when I do I hope you can help. This will give me insight into possible issues surrounding the update of a productive system. In the mean time I will make a backup and execute an export before updating the source.
