Pierre Smits, All setup described by you looks correct to me. Please take a look at the View Allow category setup and its filter applicability in classes ProductSearch and ProductSearchSession, it filters the search results if a product is not member of this view allow category. So general note is, adding parties to category is fine, also add products to that category and then finally do filtering based on it as done for view allow.
Could you please share example which tells the setup done by you, would be helpful to visualize what you are trying to achieve.
