The doc was written in Tomcat 4 in mind. Not sure if it works for Tomcat 5. I think I saw a message that it's not working well.
I have tested it and OpenEJB worked well when embedded using OpenEJB Tomcat resource factory in Tomcat 5.0.27. Although the Tomcat note about resource refs suggested to not introduce any refs definitions in conf/server.xml I did it and no problems faced. I'm wondering if I didn't do anything wrong....In fact, the exception you had already showed didn't imply it's a OpenEJB issue.
I updated some docs, especially those related to the OpenEJB/Tomcat integration. Hopefully, you can find more answers there.
And don't forget to build OpenEJB from the sources. Instructions are already at the OpenEJB web site.
