We need better names. :) The big difference is that OrcInputFormat implements org.apache.hadoop.mapred.InputFormat and OrcNewInputFormat extends org.apache.hadoop.mapreduce.InputFormat. So pick based on whether you want to use the mapred or mapreduce apis.
