That's what we actually do, with the additional constraint that the
trash gets only 50% of the free quota. The other 50% is reserved for
versions.

You could now say that the trash bin should be able to use some storage
reserved for the versions. But than on the other hand what would you do
if your trash uses the complete quota and you edit a file? Then we have
not enough storage for the version and I already see that people than
say "hey, I edited a important document and now I can't go back to the
previous version"

Further also if we implement such a behavior it could still happen that
files deleted accidentally doesn't end up in your trash bin if you
already used almost all of your quota.

I think such solutions would become quite complex, it would not
guarantee to save you from the original scenario and it would create
other concerns like I tried to describe in this mail.

At the end I still believe a good backup strategy is the only thing
which really helps here. You could also do a rm -rf on your server by
accident, your hard disc could fail, etc. You should really have some
backups. Either on your server, or your clients or best on both sides.
Also most VPS providers offers you some ways to backup your server.
