No, the groups don't show up in the userlist.

I have tried both with and without group filers. The LDAP group show up
just fine in the "only from those groups" list.
But isn't the group filter for limiting access as in not allowing users
to log in at all?

I just had partial success. If I change the "User filter" to "top, user"
then I get the groups and I seem to be able to share with them, but now
the user list gets cluttered with lots of useless stuff.
Is there a way to get the LDAP groups in the sharing dialogue but not in
the user list as they aren't really users?

I'm having a hard time understanding how the "user filter", "group
filter", the "Directory Settings" under advanced and the sharing all fit
together. The documentation didn't help me to clarify that.

Thanks,

Christian
