Not yet. We just recently introduced a PagedProvider to page results. You could start implementing an api with that. However it would make more sense in the long run to get a query parser like [1] added to core and then pass the query object around. While users usually want to enter a simple word or maybe two, apps usually want to use a search API and specify specific mimetypes, date ranges etc. Have a look at elasticsearch [2].
