I do something similar in my apps, but I use a StackPane to layer an 
ActivityIndicator over my actual content. I usually put the activity indicator 
in a box pane so I can center it. 

When my app starts up, I show the activity indicator box pane and make the 
activity indicator active. When my background tasks are done, I deactivate the 
activity indicator and hide the box pane. This has a similar effect to showing 
a modal dialog since it also prevents the user from interacting with the app.
