Oooh, thanks. I read that guide months ago but didn't remember the warning. I guess I need trumpets along with a big red box that says "Warning!" in order to notice things.
OK, so this confirms the problem. Unfortunately, setting java.awt.headless=true doesn't solve it for me. I guess I'm back to setting column widths manually.
