Changed the code to use CellValue instead of using evaluateInCell. and its
working...
HSSFFormulaEvaluator.CellValue cellValue = evaluator.evaluate(cell);
switch (cellValue.getCellType()) {
Not sure what was the issue in using evaluator.evaluateInCell
