I would agree that there is something wrong besides poi.  We make spreadsheets 
of that size on a regular basis with no issues and in a matter of seconds.  The 
jvm memory is a good place to start.  Also, if you are not using the new ooxml 
format, there is a limit of a few more than 65k rows per sheet
