And now the main question :) I found on the emailing list that there are no plans to implement charting unless Microsoft releases the Office binary formats ( http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/poi-user/200802.mbox/ajax/[EMAIL PROTECTED]). It happened In February ( http://www.microsoft.com/interop/docs/OfficeBinaryFormats.mspx).

Actually in terms of charting, it only happened a week back. The documentation released in February didn't include the charting stuff, that only came with the updated release last week. The key files would seem to be MS-OGRAPH and MS-XLS, with possibly the odd reference to MS-ODRAW too.

in usermodel package so am I right that it's going to provide high level API to export "real" charts to ppt that would further be editable in excel?

Eventually, that would be the aim, yes. However, no-one seems to be interested in sponsoring the work. So, unless someone (poi contributor or user) has a business need to work on this functionality and contribute it back, or to sponsor someone else to work on it, I can't see it being added any time soon.

If you are interested in working on this functionality, then I'm sure people would be happy to provide guidance. Join dev@ and we can point you at the docs, sample files etc. My guess is it's around a week's work once you're up to speed on the file format.

However, you also mentioned generating ppt files. ppt graphs and excel graphs are quite different beasts. Yegor might be able to advise you on what is and isn't supported by hslf in this area.
