Can I access a cell with the excel cell index?

Does the API support accessing a cell using excel format - for example, can I 
do a getString or something for a cell say "AB21" or "G7"? Or, do I have to 
figure out the row number and column number from this, using custom code? I 
appreciate your help! Thanks,Ravi.
