If you only need to 'to write/read doc files' you can just download
pre-built jars of a recent version.  For example the most recent beta
release is here: http://people.apache.org/~yegor/REL_3_5_BETA5/

I'm not sure in what context that link was published, but as you've probably
worked out, ViewVC is mostly for browsing the code.  Can you tell me which
page you are referring to?  Perhaps the language can be improved.

'Subversion':

That page contains the svn / ViewVC URLs for POI.  There is also a link to
this page ( http://www.apache.org/dev/version-control.html ) which gives
some basic examples of using the svn command line.
